The Hollies - They've Got The Tunes!
In a way, it seems a bit silly for someone like me to be writing a review of The Hollies; they have been touring every year, without fail, for over fifty years, so have surely already proved their status as a band worth seeing live decades ago. On the other hand, having now seen them twelve times in concert I can personally vouch for the fact that every single gig they do is different, even if the setlist (packed with hit singles, clever re-arrangements of older tracks to suit the current line-up, and sparkling new songs) is generally the same.
Though only two original members of the group remain (lead guitarist Tony Hicks and drummer Bobby Elliott), the atmosphere. as well as those famous harmonies the group create whilst onstage are still as brilliant as they were in those heady 1960s days. Bassist Ray Stiles (of Mud fame), rhythm guitarist Steve Lauri and keyboardist Ian Parker bring a refreshing sense of energy and amusement to the proceedings with their onstage 'banter' and general messing around, whilst current lead singer Peter Howarth never fails to stun the audience with his magnificent vocals.
If anyone is in any doubt about The Hollies as a band (they are, in this reviewer's opinion, horrendously underrated) take my advice and go and see them play live. They need no support act as for two hours they play hit after hit after hit- including instantly recognisable classics like Bus Stop, I'm Alive, He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother and The Air That I Breathe to name just a few- and are sure to provide an evening of perfect entertainment for both the young and the young at heart.
